Every merchant who uses Patrata agrees to these rules. We publish them so that a customer can read what his shopkeeper has signed up to, and hold him to it. If a merchant breaks them, tell us — it breaches our Terms and we can suspend his account.

1. Before recording anyone
- Ask permission first. Show the customer the printed slip, let him read it or read it to him, and let him tick and sign it himself. Ticking it for him is not permission.
- Never make permission a condition of a cash sale. A customer paying cash owes you nothing and should not have to agree to anything.
- Record only what you need — name, mobile number, the amount, the date. Not identity numbers, not photographs of documents, not notes about a person’s character.
- Never ask for an Aadhaar number. Patrata has no Aadhaar feature and no merchant has any business asking for one through it.
2. Keeping the record honest
- Enter what actually happened. Never a transaction that did not occur, and never a person you have no real dealings with.
- Mark payments the day you receive them. A customer who has paid and still shows as owing is the fastest way to lose him and to end up in a dispute.
- Correct a mistake as soon as you learn of it. Do not wait to be asked twice.
- Never enter data to make someone look worse, or better, than they are.
3. Asking for money
Chasing what you are owed is legitimate. How you chase it is what this section is about.
You must never:
- call, message or visit at unreasonable hours;
- contact the customer’s family, employer, neighbours or friends about the debt;
- describe anyone as a defaulter, a cheat or dishonest — inside the app or outside it;
- threaten legal, social or physical consequences;
- shame anyone publicly, or refer to their caste, community or religion;
- use anyone else to collect by threat or force.
Why this is in your interest, not just the customer’s. Indian law protects a shopkeeper who cautions another shopkeeper about a customer’s creditworthiness in good faith, to protect a genuine business interest. It does not protect anyone who exaggerates, guesses, repeats gossip, or tells people with no real interest. Keep your entries accurate, correct them when you learn they are wrong, and share only with merchants who have live exposure to the same person — and the protection is yours. Do not, and it is not.
4. The customer’s rights, which you must respect
- He can ask what you hold about him, and you must tell him.
- He can have a mistake corrected.
- He can ask to be deleted. That does not cancel what he owes you — it stops further use of his information.
- He can withdraw permission for reminders, and you must stop sending them.
- He can dispute an entry. While it is being looked at, do not treat it as settled fact.
5. What happens if a merchant breaks this
| First, for most things | We tell him what the problem is and give him seven days to put it right. |
| Immediately, no warning | For harassment of a customer, threats, deliberately false records, fraud, or asking for Aadhaar. Access is suspended the same day. |
| Always | It is recorded against his account and looked at again at renewal. |
6. If a merchant has broken this with you
Tell us. It costs nothing, you do not need an account, and you can do it in Marathi.
